Los Angeles, CA - 01/11/2025 - Leo Zacky, a fourth-generation Californian and current candidate for Governor, today called for the immediate resignation of Governor Gavin Newsom, citing a series of critical failures in the state's response to wildfires and water mismanagement. Zacky also called out Mayor Karen Bass for her role in exacerbating the crisis.
In a statement, Zacky condemned Newsom's handling of the ongoing wildfires, highlighting the "disgraceful display of mismanagement" and lack of accountability by the state. Referring to the current fire in the Palisades, Zacky emphasized that the ongoing crisis - the third avoidable fire in the Getty area within just the past seven years - points to the failure of state leadership to protect citizens and resources.
"The fact that we do not have enough water to fight fires, with many areas lacking sufficient pressure at fire hydrants, along with the inadequacy of air support and firefighting equipment, is a slap in the face of every Californian. It is an utter failure of leadership," said Zacky. "Governor Newsom's policies have left us vulnerable and ill-prepared, and now, with his push to rezone areas like the Palisades from R1 residential to R3 multi-family and low-income housing, it is clear that the Governor is advancing a land grab agenda - exploiting the suffering of tens of thousands of Angelenos. We saw similar disastrous tactics in places like Lahaina and Asheville. This is not the way we treat the people of California."
Zacky also pointed to Newsom's water policies, which he argues have contributed to the crisis. "We have seen our water diverted into the ocean and essential dams destroyed - all while we suffer the consequences of policies driven by environmental extremism. Our state is at the mercy of winds and nature, while thousands of lives and homes are lost," he continued. "This is all for the sake of a non-existent fish that hasn't been seen in the wild since 2016 and only exists in the San Francisco Estuary. Common sense dictates that we prioritize human lives over such misguided priorities."
Zacky also called for a radical shift in government procedures to streamline disaster response and rebuild the state's infrastructure. He proposed that permits for rebuilding be approved within 90 days of submission and that such permits be issued free of charge to residents. Zacky also urged the LA County Assessor to immediately begin reassessing properties that have been destroyed in the fires to ensure fair treatment for those impacted.
"The Governor should be putting the safety and well-being of Californians above all else," Zacky concluded. "Proactive efforts to prevent disasters and increase preparedness will not only save billions of dollars but, most importantly, will save lives. The Governor and the Mayor have failed. It's time for them to step down and make way for a leader who puts Californians first."
As a California resident, candidate for governor and concerned citizen, Zacky stated his unwavering commitment to protecting the people of the state. "On behalf of all Californians, I am calling for the immediate resignation of Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass. It's time for a new direction for our state - one that prioritizes the safety, prosperity, and future of all Californians."
