Constitution Week: Last Day to Celebrate
Daughters of the American Revolution celebrate history & writing
It’s not too late to celebrate Constitution Week in honor of the document that “stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties, freedoms and inalienable rights.”
In 1955, Daughters of the American Revolution submitted a request to Congress to make September 17 - September 23 Constitution Week. The resolution was eventually signed into law by Congress in 1956.
“The aims of the Constitution Week celebration are to:
Emphasize citizens' responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution.
Inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America's great heritage and the foundation for our way of life.
Encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.”
An easy way to celebrate our this week: share this information with family and friends as a reminder of the history and importance of the Constitution today. If you have students in grades 9-12 who love history and love to write, they can participate in the Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest.
“In preparation for the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, the DAR has launched the "Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest.” This contest will focus on the men and women who figured in the events of the American Revolution (1773 – 1783), and it is hoped that students will find Patriots to write about who will interest and inspire them.”
Join in the celebration of our Constitution and God Bless America.
